Mail

Apple Mail is the built-in email app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. It integrates with OmniFocus across all platforms, with the strongest integration on Mac.

App Description

On the Mac

Send to Inbox

OmniFocus 4 installs a service called “OmniFocus 4: Send to Inbox”. macOS services are actions that appear in the Services submenu of an app’s menu bar menu and can be invoked with a keyboard shortcut. With an email selected in Mail, choosing “OmniFocus 4: Send to Inbox” creates a new inbox item with the email subject as the task title and a link back to the original message in the note field. Any selected text is also included in the note field.

Hookmark

Hookmark is a Mac utility that links items across apps. When used with Apple Mail, Hookmark can generate a link to a specific email that can be pasted into the note field of an OmniFocus action. Hookmark also supports bidirectional linking, so you can navigate between the email and the OmniFocus action.

Supercharge

Supercharge is a Mac menu bar app that provides convenient access to a range of Mac settings and features. Its Mail section includes a “Copy Message Link” option that copies a link to the selected email in Apple Mail, ready to paste into the note field of an OmniFocus action.

On iPhone and iPad

Integration between Apple Mail and OmniFocus is more limited on iPhone and iPad. Mail doesn’t support the iOS share sheet, so you can’t simply tap Share and send an email to OmniFocus the way you can with some other email apps.

Drag and Drop

You can drag an email from Apple Mail into OmniFocus on iPad, or on iPhone with two hands and a little practice. OmniFocus creates a new inbox item with the email subject as the task title and a link back to the message.

Mailbox Links

Apple Mail supports mailbox links, which are URLs that link to a specific message. Pasting a link to an email into the note field of an OmniFocus action creates a tappable link back to the original email. Mailbox links only work if the message has been loaded on the device, meaning a link created on the Mac may not work on iPhone or iPad if the email has never been opened there.
