Learn why nested tags are helpful and how to create them quickly and conveniently.
It can be very helpful to group related tags together. For example, you might have a group called “communications” that includes more specific tags such as “email,” “phone,” and “message.” Similarly, you might have a ” location” tag with nested tags such as “home” and “work.”
In this video, you’ll learn how to nest tags manually and a simple way to create nested tags when adding an action using Quick Entry.
Mutually Exclusive Tags
Since this video was recorded, a new mutually exclusive tag feature was added to OmniFocus. If you select a tag group and open the inspector, you’ll see a “Mutually Exclusive” checkbox. If this box is checked, only one tag in the group can be assigned to an action, action group, or project. It’s a great quality-of-life improvement that promotes speed and consistency.
For example, let’s say you have a tag group called “Communications” that contains the tags “Email”, “Phone”, and “Message” and is set to be mutually exclusive. If you had an action called “Contact John about hiking on Saturday” that’s tagged with “Phone” and you want to change it to “Email”, simply tag the action with “Email”. The “Phone” tag will be removed automatically, as it wouldn’t make sense to tag an action with both “Email” and “Phone”.
