SUMMARY:Manifesting Ideas with OmniFocus + DEVONthink (with Kourosh Dini)
DESCRIPTION:Kourosh Dini literally wrote the book on OmniFocus. His critically acclaimed book\, Creating Flow with OmniFocus\, was originally published in 2009 and offers a wealth of practical advice to support people in using OmniFocus effectively. \nIn previous Learn OmniFocus LIVE sessions\, Kourosh shared details of his OmniFocus setup and workflows. During this session\, Kourosh will take us even deeper into his system\, sharing how he brings ideas to life\, with some help from his carefully-chosen productivity apps. \nTaking Smart Notes with DEVONthink\nKourosh’s latest book delves into another of his favourite apps\, DEVONthink. It’s a guide for people who have an abundance of great ideas that tend to get lost in the shuffle. \nTaking Smart Notes with DEVONthink guides you through the process of storing these ideas in DEVONthink in such a way that you’ll be able to easily retrieve them later. Having this rich information at your fingertips is especially useful when you’re starting a project from scratch and facing the challenges that come with a blank slate. \nUsing DEVONthink Alongside OmniFocus\nDEVONthink is a natural complement to OmniFocus. DEVONthink excels at easily storing and retrieving information and OmniFocus can be used to help ensure that the great ideas that you’ve captured are revisited regularly and manifest into something useful. \nOverview of the LIVE Session\nDuring the LIVE session\, Koroush will showcase some examples of how he turned random ideas into something tangible using OmniFocus and DEVONthink. \nAlong the way\, you’ll learn: \n\nWhy Kourosh chose DEVONthink to store his notes.\nHow to quickly capture random ideas using DEVONthink.\nHow to easily create links between ideas that you’ve captured in DEVONthink.\nHow to use tags in DEVONthink to identify notes that need to be reviewed.\nHow to link your OmniFocus projects and actions with information stored in DEVONthink.\nHow to use repeating actions in OmniFocus to ensure that the information stored in DEVONthink gets the appropriate amount of attention.\nHow DEVONthink can be used to reduce the load on OmniFocus\, making OmniFocus easier to manage and more effective.\nAnd more…\n\nAbout Kourosh Dini\nKourosh Dini\, MD is a psychiatrist\, productivity expert\, author\, and musician. \nHe works as a psychoanalyst in private practice in downtown Chicago. His award-winning productivity books include Creating Flow With OmniFocus\, Being Productive\, and Workflow Mastery. \nKourosh is featured on the Omni Group’s Inside OmniFocus site and was one of the speakers at the OmniFocus Setup event in 2013. He has also been a guest on the popular Mac Power Users and Focused podcasts. \nAn Interactive Experience\nDuring the live session\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share insights using the chatbox and audio/video conferencing. \nYou’re welcome to join the live session 15 minutes before the start time to familiarize yourself with the online meeting technology we’re using and for an informal chat with other participants. The live session will remain active for 15 minutes after the completion time for additional questions and sharing.

SUMMARY:Managing Someday/Maybe with OmniFocus 3
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use OmniFocus to manage lists of things that you’d like to consider doing in the future\, but that isn’t actionable in the present. In the Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology\, David Allen refers to these lists as “someday/maybe lists”. \nOverview of LIVE Session\nThis session is all about managing someday/maybe lists at a practical level and how you can use OmniFocus to ensure that these lists are reviewed periodically. \nWhile someday/maybe lists can be stored in OmniFocus\, it may be more practical to store at least some of these lists outside of OmniFocus. We’ll explore a variety of different scenarios so that you can determine what works best for you. By participating in the live session you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share your insights. \n \nCapturing\, Organizing and Getting Creative\nAs you process items that you’ve captured in your inbox\, you’ll inevitably encounter things that that are not ready for action. This could include something as simple as an idea for a blog post to lofty dreams such as building a beautiful home by the sea or starting a new company. \nIt’s important to have one or more places to keep track of all of the stuff that you want to revisit in the future. \nIt’s equally important that you be intentional about reviewing these future aspirations. If your psyche trusts that you’re going to look at what you’ve captured on a regular basis\, you’ll likely find that you’ll have a greater capacity to focus on current projects and actions without pie-in-the-sky ideas stealing your mental focus. \nAs you review what you’ve captured you can tap into your innate creativity and let your imagination soar. You’ll decide what to keep\, what is ripe for further exploration and what to remove from the list. If you find you accumulate more ideas than you’re likely to be able to accomplish in a lifetime\, it might be time to give some away and/or start to think about expanding your team. \nDavid Allen on Someday/Maybe Lists\nIn the book “Getting Things Done”\, David Allen coined the term “Someday/Maybe”. He shares how “…it can be useful and inspiring to maintain an ongoing list of things you might want to do at some point but not now”. He goes on to say that “…this is a ‘parking lot’ for projects that would be impossible to move on at present but that you don’t want to forget about entirely. You’d like to be reminded of the possibilities at regular intervals”. \n“Activating and maintaining your Someday/Maybe category unleashes the flow of your creative thinking—you have permission to imagine cool things to do without having to commit to doing anything about them yet.” \n– David Allen (Source: Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity) \nWhat You’ll Learn\nAttend the live session and learn: \n\nWhy it’s important to have someday/maybe lists.\nAdvantages and disadvantages of storing someday/maybe lists in OmniFocus.\nAdvantages to storing someday/maybe outside of OmniFocus (e.g. in apps such as Evernote\, Trello\, Asana\, Notion\, and Notes).\nHow to manage someday/maybe lists that are shared by a group of people (e.g. your family or a team at work).\nHow often you need to review someday/maybe lists.\nHow to use OmniFocus to ensure that both your individual and shared someday/maybe lists get the appropriate amount of attention.\nHow to use Drafts to conveniently add items to your someday/maybe lists.\nBest practices for reviewing your someday/maybe lists.\nBest practices for creating OmniFocus projects based on someday/maybe lists.\nBest practices for using tags and custom perspectives to help manage your someday/maybe lists.\nHow to deal with projects that are put on hold indefinitely.\nAnd more…\n\nRecommended Prerequisites\nEspecially if you’re new to OmniFocus\, it’s recommended that you go through the Start Smart with OmniFocus 3 course before watching this session. You might also want to watch the recording of the OmniFocus 3: Beyond the Basics course to get better acquainted with OmniFocus’ more advanced features.

SUMMARY:OmniFocus 3 Workflows with Michael Kirkham-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Michael (Mike) Kirkham-Jones will be joining us to share details of his OmniFocus setup and workflows\, that have been thoughtfully refined over the past nine years. \nExtensive Corporate Experience\nMike is a seasoned portfolio and project manager. He also has over twenty years of experience as a programmer\, working for both large and small organizations spanning a variety of sectors. His extensive work history includes being one of the first Java developers at IBM and working as an Oracle DBA (Database Administrator). \nA Passion for Technology and Productivity\nMike’s enthusiasm for productivity and technology extends beyond his day job. He enjoys writing productivity articles. And he lives in a highly-automated Apple eco-system. His automation tools of choice include Shortcuts (iOS/iPadOS)\, Zapier\, and JavaScript \nHe has learned a lot over the years and is motivated to share his productivity and technology journey so that others can benefit from his experiences. He’s also very much a student of life and is always eager and willing to learn from others. \nOmniFocus Experience\nMike’s OmniFocus journey began in 2011. He has continued to evolve his setup and workflow over the years\, with some help from Tim Stringer’s four-month Holistic Productivity for Mac and iOS course and Learn OmniFocus. \nPart of Mike’s OmniFocus journey was realizing the importance of having OmniFocus and complementary apps become a truly trusted part of his system. He makes extensive use of OmniFocus’ duration feature\, to help ensure that actions are well defined. And he emphasizes the importance of building a system that is both stable and organic. \nMike’s Shortcut library currently contains about 200 Shortcuts that collectively improve his day-to-day activities. The investment that he made in his system has led to spending relatively little time in OmniFocus\, freeing up more time to actually work on the projects and actions he defines. \nHis setup cleverly borrows aviation terms such as “ramp” and “in-flight”. He’ll be walking us through the specifics during the session. Be sure to fasten your seatbelts! \nOther Productivity Apps\nMike’s current toolset includes Evernote\, Agenda\, and Dropbox. He also employs Tiago Forte’s PARA Method to organize his digital information. \nDuring the session\, he’ll share his criteria for choosing apps and emphasizing the distinct role that OmniFocus plays in his overall system. \nClose-Knit Family in Wales\nMike lives in Wales and values his close-knit family. He’s married and has three daughters and two grandsons. \nAn Interactive Experience\nDuring the live session\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share insights using the chatbox and audio/video conferencing. You’re welcome to join the live session 15 minutes before the start time to familiarize yourself with the online meeting technology we’re using and for an informal chat with other participants. SUMMARY:Getting Back on Track with OmniFocus 3
DESCRIPTION:Do you sometimes fall off the OmniFocus bandwagon? Learn practical ways to get back on track and avoid pitfalls in the future.\n \n \nPerhaps you started using OmniFocus with great enthusiasm\, but somewhere along the way\, your excitement has waned. OmniFocus may have begun to feel like another obligation to fulfill\, rather than a powerful ally that helps you do your best work. This session is a guide as you get OmniFocus back on track and will help you avoid pitfalls in the future. \nSession Overview\nFor those of you who have been using OmniFocus for a while\, this session is designed to help you reignite your enthusiasm for OmniFocus as you unlock its potential. And if you’re new to OmniFocus\, this session provides an excellent opportunity to learn how to spot common pitfalls before they compromise your productivity. \nDrawing upon insights presented in one of our most popular articles\, Common OmniFocus Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them\, this session takes you through the most common OmniFocus missteps. As you watch the session\, you’ll be invited to take a critical look at your system. And\, if you’ve fallen into any (or all) of these pitfalls\, fear not. You’ll receive practical guidance to help you get back on the bandwagon. \n \nCommon Pitfalls\nThis session takes you on a guided review of your OmniFocus setup. You’ll identify problem areas and take steps to transform your OmniFocus setup so that you have a system that helps you navigate life and work with grace and ease. We’ll focus on the following areas: \n\nOmniFocus Has Become a Dumping Ground — Perhaps you developed a solid habit of emptying your mind into the OmniFocus inbox…and ended up with an unmanageable amount of unclarified information. We look at how to deal with an overloaded system\, and how to avoid this situation in the future. This includes clarifying what belongs in OmniFocus and what is best kept elsewhere.\nUnclarified Projects and Actions — One key to unlocking OmniFocus’ prowess is to establish a habit around creating clearly defined projects and actions. As we go through the session you’ll have the opportunity to review your existing projects and actions and to determine if they need additional clarification.\nOverwhelming Number of Overdue Items — It can be tempting to add due items to things that you want to get done by a specific date\, even though they’re not technically due. We review best practices for the use of due dates and look at ways to transition towards using due dates effectively.\nOmniFocus is Out of Date — Keeping OmniFocus up-to-date and relevant is key to having it be a useful tool. If you’ve neglected your OmniFocus housekeeping\, you’re likely not very motivated to use it and may return to old habits of being driven by what David Allen calls “latest and loudest”. We’ll look at some ways to revive your OmniFocus setup and practice as well as strategies to keep it from being left to gather virtual dust down the road.\nToo Many…or Not Enough Tags — Tags can be a highly effective way to target specific actions based on things like your physical location\, your energy level and the people you’re with. You’ll be guided through a review and revamp of your current tags so that you can get maximum value from this powerful feature.\n\nGetting Back on Track\nThis session includes practical instruction for: \n\nDetermining what belongs in OmniFocus and what is best kept elsewhere.\nTriaging your OmniFocus setup to get back to a usable system. This includes making use of OmniFocus documents/backups and OmniOutliner.\nMoving towards a system that is\, as David Allen says\, “as simple as possible\, but no simpler”.\nUsing tags in combination with folders\, projects\, and single-action lists to create a system that is convenient and manageable.\nSimplifying your OmniFocus setup by offloading projects and actions that fall outside your realm of responsibility.\nDetermining what you can realistically accomplish. To quote David Allen\, “you can do anything\, but not everything”.\nPerforming daily and weekly reviews of your OmniFocus\nUsing custom perspectives to easily identify inaccuracies and inconsistencies in your OmniFocus database.\nAnd more…\n\nRecommended Prerequisites\nEspecially if you’re new to OmniFocus\, it’s recommended that you watch the recording of the Start Smart with OmniFocus 3 session before watching this session. You might also want to watch the recording of the OmniFocus 3: Beyond the Basics session to better acquainted with OmniFocus’ more advanced features.

SUMMARY:OmniFocus 3 Workflows with Joe Buhlig
DESCRIPTION:Joe Buhlig is returning to Learn OmniFocus LIVE to take us on a tour of his current OmniFocus setup and workflows. \n \n \nJoe has a long history with OmniFocus and was a guest on Learn OmniFocus back in 2015. He has written extensively about his OmniFocus workflows on his blog and has crafted some very helpful AppleScripts that are popular among OmniFocus users. \nFor example\, Joe wrote an AppleScript called Update Reviews that changes weekly\, monthly\, and annual review dates to match the specified day of the week\, month\, and year. Another\, called Read Book Tasks\, creates actions in support of reading a book within a specific date range. \nBookworm\nSpeaking of books\, Joe co-hosts the popular Bookworm podcast with Mike Schmitz. Every two weeks Joe and Mike share their impressions of a book\, including how they’re applying the wisdom contained in its pages to their day-to-day life and work. Their Book List began with David Allen’s Getting Things Done and has since grown to over 75 titles. \nRevamping OmniFocus\nTo accommodate changes in his life\, Joe recently did a complete revamp of his OmniFocus Setup and Workflows\, drawing some wisdom from Learn OmniFocus\, Kourosh Dini\, David Sparks\, and others. \nJoe provides a summary of his new approach on his blog and will take us on a deep dive during the LIVE session\, including his decision not to use tags\, how he uses defer dates\, and his strategies for developing habits. \nAbout Joe Buhlig\nJoe grew up on a farm in Missouri and has built his career around agriculture. He’s worked in soybean seed research and on data analysis and web application development in a corporate setting. He now works from home dreaming up and creating new technologies. \nHe’s a fan of woodworking\, anything Apple\, coffee\, and DIY projects around the house. Family is very important to Joe and that’s where the bulk of his elusive free time is spent.
