SUMMARY:OmniFocus Workflows with Rev. Michael L. Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Michael L. Wilson (aka “The Tech Pastor”) is joining us from San Lorenzo\, California to share how he uses OmniFocus and complementary apps to manage his multifaceted life and work. \nMichael adopted OmniFocus in 2010 after picking up a second-hand iPhone 3G and a MacBook Air. He was drawn to OmniFocus’ flexibility and is a fan of the Omni Group’s talented team of people. Michael’s Apple devices have seen some major upgrades over the years. He now has a 27” iMac\, a 16” MacBook\, a couple of iPads\, and an iPhone. \nMichael has been a member of the Learn OmniFocus community since 2018. He regularly participates in the small-group Learn OmniFocus Office Hours gatherings on Zoom. He continues to hone his OmniFocus setup and workflows through these sessions and generously shares his productivity wisdom with other participants. \nMichael’s Approach to OmniFocus\nDuring the LIVE session\, Michael will share details of his OmniFocus setup and workflows\, including: \n\nHow he manages the ever-changing landscape of his life and work.\nThe variety of ways that he uses OmniFocus on his Macs\, iPads\, and iPhone.\nHow he makes productive use of defer dates.\nDetails of the three custom perspectives that he uses to hone in on his most important tasks.\nOther custom perspectives that provide him with customized views of his OmniFocus database and help him deal with specific situations.\nHow his foundational routines help him navigate the uncertainties of life and work.\nWays that he’s adapted his system to meet the challenges that have come with the COVID-19 pandemic.\nHis innovative approach to using MindNode to track interactions with people in his parish.\nHow and why he uses the Due app alongside OmniFocus.\nHow OmniOutliner fits into his productivity system.\n\nAbout Michael Wilson\nRev. Michael L. Wilson is a native of Alameda County in the San Francisco Bay Area. He and his wife of 32 years continue to call the Bay Area home. \nMichael’s interest in technology dates back to his days in the United States Air Force (USAF). During his time in the military\, he was introduced to the Zenith Heath Kit Computer and the BASIC programming language. \nAfter leaving USAF\, he was hired by Seagate Technologies in Scotts Valley\, California to write test software for drives and drive interfaces. \nMichael’s productivity experience also spans many years. He’s a fan of David Allen\, Hyrum Smith\, and Stephen Covey. He previously used a Franklin Planner to track all the requests for software features and to schedule releases. And in 1999\, he bought a Palm V and started storing and tracking his notes and tasks electronically. \nFor the past 15 years\, Michael has served as the pastor of the Cornerstone Fellowship\, a Baptist Church in San Lorenzo\, California\, the same church that he attended as a child. \nMichael wears many hats at the church. In addition to being the pastor\, he’s the landlord (his church rents space to other churches)\, network administrator\, counsellor\, building manager\, project manager for church-related projects\, and much more. His love for tech has earned him the nickname\, “The Tech Pastor”. \nAn Interactive Experience\nDuring the live session\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share insights using the chatbox and audio/video conferencing. \nYou’re welcome to join the live session 15 minutes before the start time to familiarize yourself with the online meeting technology we’re using and for an informal chat with other participants. The live session will remain active for 15 minutes after the completion time for additional questions and sharing.

SUMMARY:Using OmniFocus with MindNode
DESCRIPTION:Are you faced with a large project? Do you have more ideas than you know what to do with? Mind mapping can be very helpful.\nBefore creating projects and actions in OmniFocus\, it’s a good idea to have at least some sense of where you’re going and the scope of the work. Mind mapping can be a very helpful way to bring form to scattered ideas and can help make even the loftiest of goals manageable. \nFeatured App: MindNode\nThis session features MindNode\, a beautifully crafted\, intuitive\, and highly functional mind mapping app for Mac\, iPhone\, and iPad. \nWe make extensive use of MindNode at Learn OmniFocus. Appropriately enough\, this session and much of our content began in MindNode. It’s also the app that our friends at The Sweet Setup selected as the best mind mapping app. \nWhile this session centres around MindNode\, the strategies that we’ll be sharing can be applied using virtually any mind mapping app\, including iThoughts and MindMeister. \n \nFree MindNode Editor and MindNode Plus\nMindNode offers a free editor\, that includes many of the features that we’ll be showcasing in this session. You also have the option of subscribing to MindNode Plus to tap into their full feature set\, which includes Visual Tags\, Focus Mode and Quick Entry. \nMindNode is available on the App Store (iPhone\, iPad) and the Mac App Store. You can upgrade to MindNode Plus through an in-app purchase. MindNode Plus is also included with a Setapp subscription. Visit MindNode’s pricing pagefor more information. \nEveryone is welcome. No previous MindNode or mind mapping experience is required.\nYou’re very welcome to attend even if you’re new to MindNode\, and mind mapping in general. This session includes an overview of mind mapping\, practical examples of where mind mapping can be very useful\, and an introduction to the MindNode app. Most notably\, we’ll look at how MindNode can be used alongside OmniFocus. \nSession Overview\nJoin this interactive session and learn: \n\nThe basics of mind mapping.\nWhy OmniFocus generally isn’t the best place to plan your work.\nThe many ways that MindNode can be used as a complement to OmniFocus.\nHow to transform a MindNode mind map into one or more OmniFocus projects\, action groups\, and actions.\nHow to use the Tasks feature in MindNode to keep track of the progress being made on projects that you’re managing in OmniFocus.\nGuidelines for determining what belongs in MindNode and what’s better managed using OmniFocus.\nHow to use MindNode to incubate ideas that may one day become projects and actions in OmniFocus.\nHow to use MindNode to design and structure your OmniFocus setup (i.e. folders and tags).\nHow Visual Tags (MindNode Plus) can be used to easily visualize work that’s currently being managed using OmniFocus.\nHow and when to use OmniOutliner alongside MindNode and where OmniFocus fits into this picture. \nAnd more…\n\nAn Interactive Experience\nDuring the live session\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share insights using the chatbox and audio/video conferencing. \nYou’re welcome to join the live session 15 minutes before the start time to familiarize yourself with the online meeting technology we’re using and for an informal chat with other participants. SUMMARY:Using OmniFocus 3 with Asana
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nOmniFocus is fundamentally a personal task manager. It’s a tool that allows you to organize objectives and actions tied to your own personal commitments. You get to decide what goes in OmniFocus and can organize OmniFocus in whatever way makes the most sense to you. But\, what about work that involves collaboration? This could be anything from planning a vacation to projects in your day job that involve a team of people. \nPairing Team Collaboration with Personal Task Management\nThis session features Asana\, a well-established project management solution that can be used to manage collaborative projects large and small. It can also be a helpful place to keep track of the big picture and to store ideas\, customer requests\, meeting agendas\, and more. We’ll explore some features and integrations that can be used with the free version of Asana\, which supports teams of up to 15 people. SUMMARY:Manifesting Ideas with OmniFocus + DEVONthink (with Kourosh Dini)
DESCRIPTION:Kourosh Dini literally wrote the book on OmniFocus. His critically acclaimed book\, Creating Flow with OmniFocus\, was originally published in 2009 and offers a wealth of practical advice to support people in using OmniFocus effectively. \nIn previous Learn OmniFocus LIVE sessions\, Kourosh shared details of his OmniFocus setup and workflows. During this session\, Kourosh will take us even deeper into his system\, sharing how he brings ideas to life\, with some help from his carefully-chosen productivity apps. \nTaking Smart Notes with DEVONthink\nKourosh’s latest book delves into another of his favourite apps\, DEVONthink. It’s a guide for people who have an abundance of great ideas that tend to get lost in the shuffle. \nTaking Smart Notes with DEVONthink guides you through the process of storing these ideas in DEVONthink in such a way that you’ll be able to easily retrieve them later. Having this rich information at your fingertips is especially useful when you’re starting a project from scratch and facing the challenges that come with a blank slate. \nUsing DEVONthink Alongside OmniFocus\nDEVONthink is a natural complement to OmniFocus. DEVONthink excels at easily storing and retrieving information and OmniFocus can be used to help ensure that the great ideas that you’ve captured are revisited regularly and manifest into something useful. \nOverview of the LIVE Session\nDuring the LIVE session\, Koroush will showcase some examples of how he turned random ideas into something tangible using OmniFocus and DEVONthink. \nAlong the way\, you’ll learn: \n\nWhy Kourosh chose DEVONthink to store his notes.\nHow to quickly capture random ideas using DEVONthink.\nHow to easily create links between ideas that you’ve captured in DEVONthink.\nHow to use tags in DEVONthink to identify notes that need to be reviewed.\nHow to link your OmniFocus projects and actions with information stored in DEVONthink.\nHow to use repeating actions in OmniFocus to ensure that the information stored in DEVONthink gets the appropriate amount of attention.\nHow DEVONthink can be used to reduce the load on OmniFocus\, making OmniFocus easier to manage and more effective.\nAnd more…\n\nAbout Kourosh Dini\nKourosh Dini\, MD is a psychiatrist\, productivity expert\, author\, and musician. \nHe works as a psychoanalyst in private practice in downtown Chicago. His award-winning productivity books include Creating Flow With OmniFocus\, Being Productive\, and Workflow Mastery. \nKourosh is featured on the Omni Group’s Inside OmniFocus site and was one of the speakers at the OmniFocus Setup event in 2013. SUMMARY:Managing Someday/Maybe with OmniFocus 3
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use OmniFocus to manage lists of things that you’d like to consider doing in the future\, but that isn’t actionable in the present. In the Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology\, David Allen refers to these lists as “someday/maybe lists”. \nOverview of LIVE Session\nThis session is all about managing someday/maybe lists at a practical level and how you can use OmniFocus to ensure that these lists are reviewed periodically. \nWhile someday/maybe lists can be stored in OmniFocus\, it may be more practical to store at least some of these lists outside of OmniFocus. We’ll explore a variety of different scenarios so that you can determine what works best for you. By participating in the live session you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share your insights. \n \nCapturing\, Organizing and Getting Creative\nAs you process items that you’ve captured in your inbox\, you’ll inevitably encounter things that that are not ready for action. This could include something as simple as an idea for a blog post to lofty dreams such as building a beautiful home by the sea or starting a new company. \nIt’s important to have one or more places to keep track of all of the stuff that you want to revisit in the future. \nIt’s equally important that you be intentional about reviewing these future aspirations. If your psyche trusts that you’re going to look at what you’ve captured on a regular basis\, you’ll likely find that you’ll have a greater capacity to focus on current projects and actions without pie-in-the-sky ideas stealing your mental focus. \nAs you review what you’ve captured you can tap into your innate creativity and let your imagination soar. You’ll decide what to keep\, what is ripe for further exploration and what to remove from the list. If you find you accumulate more ideas than you’re likely to be able to accomplish in a lifetime\, it might be time to give some away and/or start to think about expanding your team. \nDavid Allen on Someday/Maybe Lists\nIn the book “Getting Things Done”\, David Allen coined the term “Someday/Maybe”. He shares how “…it can be useful and inspiring to maintain an ongoing list of things you might want to do at some point but not now”. He goes on to say that “…this is a ‘parking lot’ for projects that would be impossible to move on at present but that you don’t want to forget about entirely. You’d like to be reminded of the possibilities at regular intervals”. \n“Activating and maintaining your Someday/Maybe category unleashes the flow of your creative thinking—you have permission to imagine cool things to do without having to commit to doing anything about them yet.” \n– David Allen (Source: Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity) \nWhat You’ll Learn\nAttend the live session and learn: \n\nWhy it’s important to have someday/maybe lists.\nAdvantages and disadvantages of storing someday/maybe lists in OmniFocus.\nAdvantages to storing someday/maybe outside of OmniFocus (e.g. in apps such as Evernote\, Trello\, Asana\, Notion\, and Notes).\nHow to manage someday/maybe lists that are shared by a group of people (e.g. your family or a team at work).\nHow often you need to review someday/maybe lists.\nHow to use OmniFocus to ensure that both your individual and shared someday/maybe lists get the appropriate amount of attention.\nHow to use Drafts to conveniently add items to your someday/maybe lists.\nBest practices for reviewing your someday/maybe lists.\nBest practices for creating OmniFocus projects based on someday/maybe lists.\nBest practices for using tags and custom perspectives to help manage your someday/maybe lists.\nHow to deal with projects that are put on hold indefinitely.\nAnd more…\n\nRecommended Prerequisites\nEspecially if you’re new to OmniFocus\, it’s recommended that you go through the Start Smart with OmniFocus 3 course before watching this session. You might also want to watch the recording of the OmniFocus 3: Beyond the Basics course to get better acquainted with OmniFocus’ more advanced features.

SUMMARY:OmniFocus 3 Workflows with Michael Kirkham-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Michael (Mike) Kirkham-Jones will be joining us to share details of his OmniFocus setup and workflows\, that have been thoughtfully refined over the past nine years. \nExtensive Corporate Experience\nMike is a seasoned portfolio and project manager. He also has over twenty years of experience as a programmer\, working for both large and small organizations spanning a variety of sectors. His extensive work history includes being one of the first Java developers at IBM and working as an Oracle DBA (Database Administrator). \nA Passion for Technology and Productivity\nMike’s enthusiasm for productivity and technology extends beyond his day job. He enjoys writing productivity articles. And he lives in a highly-automated Apple eco-system. His automation tools of choice include Shortcuts (iOS/iPadOS)\, Zapier\, and JavaScript \nHe has learned a lot over the years and is motivated to share his productivity and technology journey so that others can benefit from his experiences. He’s also very much a student of life and is always eager and willing to learn from others. \nOmniFocus Experience\nMike’s OmniFocus journey began in 2011. He has continued to evolve his setup and workflow over the years\, with some help from Tim Stringer’s four-month Holistic Productivity for Mac and iOS course and Learn OmniFocus. \nPart of Mike’s OmniFocus journey was realizing the importance of having OmniFocus and complementary apps become a truly trusted part of his system. He makes extensive use of OmniFocus’ duration feature\, to help ensure that actions are well defined. And he emphasizes the importance of building a system that is both stable and organic. \nMike’s Shortcut library currently contains about 200 Shortcuts that collectively improve his day-to-day activities. The investment that he made in his system has led to spending relatively little time in OmniFocus\, freeing up more time to actually work on the projects and actions he defines. \nHis setup cleverly borrows aviation terms such as “ramp” and “in-flight”. He’ll be walking us through the specifics during the session. Be sure to fasten your seatbelts! \nOther Productivity Apps\nMike’s current toolset includes Evernote\, Agenda\, and Dropbox. He also employs Tiago Forte’s PARA Method to organize his digital information. \nDuring the session\, he’ll share his criteria for choosing apps and emphasizing the distinct role that OmniFocus plays in his overall system. \nClose-Knit Family in Wales\nMike lives in Wales and values his close-knit family. He’s married and has three daughters and two grandsons. \nAn Interactive Experience\nDuring the live session\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share insights using the chatbox and audio/video conferencing. You’re welcome to join the live session 15 minutes before the start time to familiarize yourself with the online meeting technology we’re using and for an informal chat with other participants. The live session will remain active for 15 minutes after the completion time for additional questions and sharing.
