DESCRIPTION:Join automation legend\, Sal Soghoian and learn how to automate and enhance OmniFocus on iPhone\, iPad\, and Mac using Omni Automation.\nOmni Automation is a technology that allows you to add functionality to OmniFocus on iPhone\, iPad\, and Mac using “plug-ins.” This technology is also supported by Omni’s other apps and can be a helpful way to create a bridge between OmniFocus\, OmniOutliner\, OmniGraffle\, and OmniPlan. \nIn the Omni Automation – Fundamentals course we introduced you to the basics of Omni Automation\, including how to install\, configure\, and make simple customizations to Omni Automation plug-ins. \n \nThis session builds on this foundation and provides you with insights and skills that will be very helpful as you customize existing OmniFocus plug-ins and write your own. Sal will take you on a guided tour that will introduce you to the power of Omni Automation through the Console. You’ll even have the opportunity to create and install your own plug-in. \nSession Format\nYou’re encouraged to follow along on your Mac or iPad as we go through the session. After each section\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask Sal questions about the content that’s been covered so far. There will also be a more general Omni Automation Q & A towards the end of the session. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nSal Soghoian will start by showing how you can access and update your projects and actions using the Console feature that’s built into OmniFocus and how to use the built-in API Reference to learn about the wide variety of ways that you can tap into OmniFocus’ power. Sal will teach you how to store and retrieve information stored in “variables” and will demonstrate how to view and update these variables using the Console. \nWhile the Console is very useful as a learning and debugging tool\, you’ll most likely be tapping into the power of Omni Automation through plug-ins. These are essentially text files that contain a block of “metadata” (e.g. the name of the plug-in and the author)\, “validating code” that identifies when the plug-in should be enabled (e.g. when at least one action is selected)\, and the “action function”\, where the work actually happens (e.g. toggling tags or automatically updating due dates). \nSal will guide you through the process of creating and installing your own plug-in. He shared some highlights from his extensive automation background and talked about the journey that took him from Apple to the Omni Group. \nAbout Sal Soghoian\n \nSal Soghoian is a user automation expert\, software developer\, author\, and musician. He’s best known for having the role of  Product Manager of Automation Technologies at Apple Inc. from 1997 through 2016. \nDuring Sal’s many years at Apple\, he advanced AppleScript\, Automator\, JavaScript for Automation (JXA)\, System Services\, the Terminal\, Apple Configurator\, and the other macOS automation tools. He also wrote scripting dictionaries for iWork\, iPhoto\, Aperture and Photos\, authored the “Mastered for iTunes” automation tools\, and designed and wrote the user automation support in the Apple Configurator application.  \nPrior to his tenure at Apple\, Sal created automation solutions for the publishing industry\, authored the popular “Sal’s AppleScript Snippets” collection\, created the ShadowCaster QuarkXPress XTension\, wrote two books\, including “AppleScript 1-2-3\,” and penned numerous magazine articles. \nIn recent years\, Sal has been assisting The Omni Group with the creation and development of Omni Automation\, a device-independent automation framework for Omni applications. With some thoughtful setup and regular use\, it can have a profoundly positive impact on your life and work. The challenge is that it’s all too easy to forget about your carefully crafted system as you navigate days that don’t go as planned. External communications such as text messages and emails can easily dominate your attention\, taking the spotlight off of your important tasks in OmniFocus. \n \nWidgets: A Portal Into OmniFocus\nWidgets\, that live on the home screen of your iPhone and iPad\, are very helpful for surfacing information stored within OmniFocus and giving you quick access to OmniFocus features and perspectives. DESCRIPTION:Learn OmniFocus Office Hours gives you the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about your OmniFocus setup and workflows in a video-conferenced virtual conference room. This session will be facilitated by Learn OmniFocus Founder\, Tim Stringer. \nTo allow for maximum interactivity\, registration in this session is limited to 10 participants. When you register you’ll be asked to agree to join with your video camera turn on and to keep what’s shared by other participants confidential. To help protect the privacy of participants\, sessions won’t be recorded. \nYou’re welcome to discuss and ask questions about anything related to OmniFocus and complementary third-party apps. You can optionally share your Mac or iOS screen with the group to add a visual element to the discussions. In order to share your iOS screen\, you’ll need to join the virtual meeting from a Mac that’s on the same network as your iOS device. \nIf you register and discover that you’re not able to attend\, please let us know ASAP so that we can make your spot available to another Learn OmniFocus Member.

SUMMARY:OmniFocus Workflows with Allen Pike
DESCRIPTION:OmniFocus aficionado and entrepreneur Allen Pike will be joining us from Vancouver\, Canada to share how he uses OmniFocus to help run his app design and development company\, Steamclock Software.\nAllen has been using OmniFocus since 2015. He’ll be taking us on a tour of his OmniFocus setup and workflows\, highlighting his use of tags and custom perspectives. Along the way\, he’ll highlight some of the mental models he approaches OmniFocus with that help him support his team\, and will touch on some of the other productivity apps that help him be organized and intentional. \nTo get a taste of Allen’s approach to OmniFocus (and life)\, check out his recent interview on The Omni Show. Allen also contributed an article titled Blowing Up Your Workflow with OmniFocus 3 to the Omni Group’s Inside OmniFocus site and reflects on his use of OmniFocus (and much more) on his personal blog. \nAbout Allen Pike\nAllen co-founded Steamclock Software in 2010 after working as a Software Engineer at Apple. He runs a team of designers and developers who produce polished apps for iOS\, iPadOS\, and Android. \nHe has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he’s cultivated over his many years working in the software industry. Allen enjoys teaching and sharing stories that encapsulate his experience. He’s a called-upon speaker and podcast guest and co-hosts the monthly Fun Fact podcast with Arik Devens. \nAllen is also the director of Two Spies\, a turned-based game for iPhone and iPad that made its debut on the App Store in December 2019. \nIn his downtime\, Allen enjoys playing his guitar and writing articles for his personal blog. \nYou can follow Allen Pike on Twitter @apike. \n
