SUMMARY:Automating OmniFocus: Guided Tour with Sal Soghoian
DESCRIPTION:Join automation legend\, Sal Soghoian and learn how to automate and enhance OmniFocus on iPhone\, iPad\, and Mac using Omni Automation.\nOmni Automation is a technology that allows you to add functionality to OmniFocus on iPhone\, iPad\, and Mac using “plug-ins.” This technology is also supported by Omni’s other apps and can be a helpful way to create a bridge between OmniFocus\, OmniOutliner\, OmniGraffle\, and OmniPlan. \nIn the Omni Automation – Fundamentals course we introduced you to the basics of Omni Automation\, including how to install\, configure\, and make simple customizations to Omni Automation plug-ins. \n \nThis session builds on this foundation and provides you with insights and skills that will be very helpful as you customize existing OmniFocus plug-ins and write your own. Sal will take you on a guided tour that will introduce you to the power of Omni Automation through the Console. You’ll even have the opportunity to create and install your own plug-in. \nSession Format\nYou’re encouraged to follow along on your Mac or iPad as we go through the session. After each section\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask Sal questions about the content that’s been covered so far. There will also be a more general Omni Automation Q & A towards the end of the session. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nSal Soghoian will start by showing how you can access and update your projects and actions using the Console feature that’s built into OmniFocus and how to use the built-in API Reference to learn about the wide variety of ways that you can tap into OmniFocus’ power. Sal will teach you how to store and retrieve information stored in “variables” and will demonstrate how to view and update these variables using the Console. \nWhile the Console is very useful as a learning and debugging tool\, you’ll most likely be tapping into the power of Omni Automation through plug-ins. These are essentially text files that contain a block of “metadata” (e.g. the name of the plug-in and the author)\, “validating code” that identifies when the plug-in should be enabled (e.g. when at least one action is selected)\, and the “action function”\, where the work actually happens (e.g. toggling tags or automatically updating due dates). \nSal will guide you through the process of creating and installing your own plug-in. Along the way\, he’ll also cover plug-in management\, including techniques for adding keyboard shortcuts to frequently used plug-ins. \nYou’ll find a detailed outline of this session on the Omni Automation website. \nEveryone is Welcome\nIf you’re new to JavaScript (and programming in general)\, you’ll walk away from the session with a basic understanding of the many ways that Omni Automation can be used to add features to OmniFocus and make your workflows more efficient. And if you’re a seasoned JavaScript developer\, you’ll gain an understanding of how to tap into OmniFocus’ extensive API when writing your own plug-ins. \nWhile You’re Waiting\nIf you’re new to Omni Automation\, the Omni Automation – Fundamentals course is a good place to start. This course will introduce you to the basics of Omni Automation in preparation for digging into the details covered in this session. \nA basic understanding of JavaScript is helpful\, but not essential. Some suggested learning resources that Sal shared on the Omni Automation website include The JavaScript Beginners Handbook\, w3cschools.com\, MDN Mozilla JavaScript Guide\, and Eloquent JavaScript. Also\, be sure to check out the OmniFocus section of the Omni Automation website to get a head start on the concepts and techniques that we’ll be covering in this session. \nSal Soghoian was featured on the Omni Group’s podcast\, The Omni Show. He shared some highlights from his extensive automation background and talked about the journey that took him from Apple to the Omni Group. \nAbout Sal Soghoian\n \nSal Soghoian is a user automation expert\, software developer\, author\, and musician. He’s best known for having the role of  Product Manager of Automation Technologies at Apple Inc. from 1997 through 2016. \nDuring Sal’s many years at Apple\, he advanced AppleScript\, Automator\, JavaScript for Automation (JXA)\, System Services\, the Terminal\, Apple Configurator\, and the other macOS automation tools. He also wrote scripting dictionaries for iWork\, iPhoto\, Aperture and Photos\, authored the “Mastered for iTunes” automation tools\, and designed and wrote the user automation support in the Apple Configurator application.  \nPrior to his tenure at Apple\, Sal created automation solutions for the publishing industry\, authored the popular “Sal’s AppleScript Snippets” collection\, created the ShadowCaster QuarkXPress XTension\, wrote two books\, including “AppleScript 1-2-3\,” and penned numerous magazine articles. \nIn recent years\, Sal has been assisting The Omni Group with the creation and development of Omni Automation\, a device-independent automation framework for Omni applications. He also continues to write and consult on automation solutions\, and firmly believes his credo\, “The power of the computer should reside in the hands of the one using it.” \nPhoto Credit: Phuc Pham for WIRED

SUMMARY:Enhancing OmniFocus: Shortcuts & Widgets with Scotty Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Scotty Jackson is returning to Learn OmniFocus to teach you how to create Shortcuts and Widgets that surface OmniFocus tasks on your iPhone and iPad in a highly visual way.\nOmniFocus is a highly flexible app for managing personal tasks. With some thoughtful setup and regular use\, it can have a profoundly positive impact on your life and work. The challenge is that it’s all too easy to forget about your carefully crafted system as you navigate days that don’t go as planned. External communications such as text messages and emails can easily dominate your attention\, taking the spotlight off of your important tasks in OmniFocus. \n \nWidgets: A Portal Into OmniFocus\nWidgets\, that live on the home screen of your iPhone and iPad\, are very helpful for surfacing information stored within OmniFocus and giving you quick access to OmniFocus features and perspectives. For example\, the built-in OmniFocus Widgets can provide a quick way to capture tasks into your OmniFocus inbox\, can display a seven-day Forecast\, and can display the contents of your most-used perspectives. \nThird-party apps make it possible to take this a step further. For example\, you can use the clever Charty app to display a bar graph showing completed actions and a donut chart that fills in as you complete actions on your daily Hot List. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nScotty Jackson will join us to share how he uses Shortcuts and Widgets to add a new dimension to OmniFocus on iPhone and iPad. \nHe’ll guide you through the process of creating a customized home screen that displays OmniFocus tasks in a variety of ways alongside key appointments from your calendar. Along the way\, you’ll learn how to make productive use of three apps that add power and flexibility to Shortcuts and Widgets\, namely Charty\, WidgetPack\, and Toolbox Pro. \nScotty will also provide you with instructions for customizing the Shortcuts and Widgets that he provides so that they’re fine-tuned to your personal preferences. \nWhile You’re Waiting\nScotty has documented some of what he’ll be sharing in this session on his blog. His recent My Reimagined Productivity Home Screen post will give you a taste of what he’ll be teaching during this session. \nAlso\, be sure to check out the Nested Folders podcast that Scotty co-hosts with Rosemary Orchard. Scotty has also shared his OmniFocus setup and workflows as a guest on other podcasts\, including The Omni Show\, Home Work\, Automators\, and Productivity in Tech. \nAbout Scotty Jackson\nScotty is a long-time student of David Allen’s Getting Things Done approach to productivity and has been using OmniFocus since the very beginning. He has a disciplined and thoughtful approach to project and task management that he applies to both personal areas of life and to his corporate endeavours. \nScotty has worked in a variety of technology-related roles and currently supports a development team that builds and maintains corporate intranet websites. He works to help digitally enable teams through the introduction of tools\, processes\, and practices. \nHis day job is balanced with being a husband and father to three children\, including a six-year-old and twelve-year-old twins. \nYou can follow Scotty on Twitter at @heyscottyj.

SUMMARY:Linking OmniFocus: Beyond Task Management
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to build a productivity system that centres around OmniFocus and is tightly integrated with apps for schedule management\, planning\, note-taking\, researching\, and more.\nIt’s no secret that we’re fans of OmniFocus. There are many things that make OmniFocus uniquely useful for managing personal tasks. OmniFocus is highly customizable and\, since it’s a native app\, it’s well integrated on Apple platforms. OmniFocus also sports some unique features\, such as Review and Forecast\, that help foster a proactive approach to life and work. \nBeyond OmniFocus\nDespite its considerable strengths\, OmniFocus isn’t very well suited to some types of activities. \nFor example\, OmniFocus is generally not the best place to perform higher-level planning. This is where an app such as MindNode or OmniOutliner shines. And OmniFocus isn’t well suited to keeping track of reference information. Instead\, it makes more sense to use an app that’s designed to be an information repository\, such as Apple Notes\, DEVONthink\, or Craft. \n \nBuilding the Ultimate Productivity App\nThis session focuses on developing a productivity system that consists of a collection of best-of-breed apps and services. Think of it as creating the ultimate productivity app in a way that combines the best features of a suite of thoughtfully chosen apps. \nThis system is most useful when there are quick and convenient ways to navigate between the various components. For example\, if you have an OmniFocus action prompting you to spend 30 minutes researching a specific topic\, it’s very helpful if you have seamless access to the relevant research material and a place to keep the notes that you’ll be capturing in the process. \nCreating a Space for Deep Focus\nOnce we’ve covered the mechanics of linking apps and services to OmniFocus\, we’ll look at a variety of ways that you can quickly shift into the context that’s most relevant. These strategies are the digital equivalent of clearing everything from your desk\, except what’s required to work on a specific project or area of life. \nFor example\, if you’re working on a novel\, you’ll likely want to have OmniFocus-related projects and actions at the forefront and have convenient access to the app that you’re using to do your writing (e.g. Ulysses). To enter a focused\, productive state\, everything that’s not relevant to the task at hand needs to fade into the background. \nAfter spending some time on your literary masterpiece\, you may choose to shift to working on your company’s annual budget. Again\, you’ll want to be able to bring all the relevant tasks and resources to the forefront and relegate anything that’s not required to work on this budget out of sight (and out of mind). \nWhat You’ll Learn\nAttend the LIVE session and learn: \n\nWhat OmniFocus is well suited for…and where it falls short.\nWhy it’s important that the path of least resistance be the most productive one.\nPractical ways to conveniently shift into a specific mode of working that’s conducive to performing deep\, focused work.\nStrategies for using your calendar app to help ensure that your most important projects and tasks get the attention they deserve.\nHow to build a Project Dashboard using an app such as Apple Notes or Craft.\nHow to use URL links to reference specific information from OmniFocus. We’ll look at examples of both native (e.g. DEVONthink) and web apps (e.g. Asana\, Google Docs).\nPractical ways to use Hook (Mac) to connect related items together (e.g. connecting an OmniFocus project to both an OmniOutliner document and project support notes contained in a note-taking app).\nHow to switch modes and keep project resources at your fingertips using Workspaces (Mac).\nHow to use Keyboard Maestro (Mac) to add speed\, convenience\, and flexibility to switching between related apps and services.\nPractical ways to use Omni Automation to quickly jump between OmniFocus and other apps and services.\nAnd more…\n\nRecommended Prerequisites\nEspecially if you’re new to OmniFocus\, it’s recommended that you go through the Start Smart with OmniFocus 3 course before watching this session. You might also want to watch the recording of the OmniFocus 3: Beyond the Basics course to get better acquainted with OmniFocus’ more advanced features.

SUMMARY:Using OmniFocus with Drafts
DESCRIPTION:Is your OmniFocus Inbox overflowing with tasks\, random thoughts\, ideas\, and more? Consider capturing into Drafts instead.\n\nAvailable in Our Course Library\nDid you miss the LIVE session? Using OmniFocus with Drafts is now available in our growing course library along with other courses that cover a wide variety of topics.\nWhile it may feel good to dump your thoughts into the OmniFocus inbox\, you may soon discover that you quickly end up with an unmanageable OmniFocus inbox where critical actions get lost in the noise. An alternate strategy is to capture into the Drafts app (Mac\, iPhone\, iPad\, and Apple Watch) and use Drafts actions to quickly and easily transform and redirect what you’ve captured. \nDrafts can also be a great complement to OmniFocus when it’s time to get down to work. You can store project templates in Drafts and easily transform them into projects. Drafts can also be an excellent place to store your project support material. And it’s quick and easy to link what you’ve stored in Drafts to the relevant projects and actions in OmniFocus. \nDrafts: “Where Text Starts”\nAt a basic level\, you can think of Drafts as the digital equivalent of a notepad. \n \nWhen you launch Drafts\, you’re presented with a blank note and can type (or\, if you have an iPad with an Apple Pencil\, Scribble) whatever’s on your mind — whether it’s an interesting idea you had while out walking the dog or a promise that you just made to a client. You simply capture what has your attention into Drafts’ inbox\, without worrying about where this information belongs and what (if any) action needs to be taken. \nYour Drafts inbox may contain information or tasks that are time-sensitive\, so it’s a good idea to regularly “clarify” (in Getting Things Done terms) what you’ve captured in Drafts. This process includes determining whether what you’ve captured is actionable\, or if it’s something that you’ll choose to keep for future reference. Actionable captures can be transformed into actionable tasks and sent off to OmniFocus. Things that aren’t immediately actionable\, but still potentially have future value (e.g. the great idea that you had in the shower) can be sent off to the appropriate repository for future review\, or even tagged and archived in Drafts itself. \nThe real magic of Drafts is its support for actions. In a nutshell\, actions allow you to quickly and conveniently process your Drafts. For example\, one action might transform a Draft into an OmniFocus action and another might send it off to your idea repository in DEVONthink. Drafts comes pre-installed with a variety of actions. And you’ll find many more in the Drafts Directory. If you have the Drafts Pro upgrade you can modify actions written by others and create your own from scratch. \nDrafts: Free & Pro Subscription\nThere’s a free tier of Drafts that allows you to create\, edit\, and sync drafts and make use of all of the actions in the Drafts Directory. Drafts Pro is an optional subscription-based upgrade that\, among other things\, lets you create and edit actions\, organize your drafts into workspaces\, and make use of widgets. \nMuch of what you’ll learn in this session can be accomplished using the free version of Drafts. Though\, we’ll also show some of the features that are exclusive to Drafts Pro to give you a taste of what’s available if you choose to upgrade. \nEveryone is welcome. No previous Drafts experience is required.\nYou’re very welcome to attend\, even if you’re new to Drafts. This session includes an overview of the Drafts app for Mac\, iPhone\, iPad\, and Apple Watch\, highlighting how it’s a natural complement to OmniFocus.  \nSession Overview\nJoin this interactive session and learn: \n\nWhen and why it makes more sense to capture into Drafts instead of OmniFocus.\nA variety of ways to use existing Drafts actions to transform drafts into OmniFocus actions.\nHow to use Drafts to store project support materials\, and when it makes sense to use tags and workspaces (Drafts Pro).\nHow to create OmniFocus projects in Drafts using the TaskPaper syntax.\nHow to create and make use of OmniFocus project templates that are stored in Drafts.\nA quick and convenient way to capture on the Apple Watch using Drafts.\nHow to create Shortcuts (iPhone/iPad) that automate the creations of drafts that are linked to new OmniFocus actions.\nHow to link Drafts and OmniFocus using Hook (Mac).\nAnd more…\n\nAn Interactive Experience\nDuring the live session\, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and share insights using the chatbox and audio/video conferencing. \nYou’re welcome to join the live session 15 minutes before the start time to familiarize yourself with the online meeting technology we’re using and for an informal chat with other participants. The live session will remain active for 15 minutes after the completion time for additional questions and sharing.
